What decides which makeup looks best on you
The makeup that looks best on you is the look that fits the occasion, in colors that suit your undertone and skin depth, placed for your eye and face shape. Those are three separate decisions, and our guides answer them in that order:
- The occasion picks the look. Light and length matter most: daylight and offices show every edge, while dim evening light mutes color, so you can add definition. Cameras flatten features, so add a little more brow, lash and blush definition. See which makeup look fits the occasion.
- Undertone and depth pick the colors. Warm undertones suit peach, coral and gold; cool undertones suit rose, berry and mauve; neutral can wear most families; olive suits terracotta, brick and berry. Match the depth of each shade to your skin. Take the undertone test or read makeup shades for your skin tone.
- Eye and face shape mostly change placement. Eyeliner Focused and Smokey Eyes adapt to every eye shape; hooded eyes and monolids need shadow placed with the eyes open, and where blush goes changes with face shape. See makeup for your eye shape and blush and contour placement for your face shape.
Skill matters too. A well-blended Soft Glam beats a rushed Smokey Eye: if you are new to makeup, start with a beginner look such as Business or Soft Glam, and practice new techniques before the day.
How the quiz chooses your looks
Each answer adds points to the looks a Lookslate guide recommends for it. The look with the most points comes first; up to three looks with a positive score are shown, each with its strongest reason.
| Answer | What it changes | Where the rule comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Occasion | Picks the main look (4 points): Business for work and video calls, Soft Glam for daytime events, dates and photos, Evening Glam for evening and flash photos, Smokey Eyes for nights out, Bronze Goddess for summer, Eyeliner Focused for everyday with one statement | Occasion guide, makeup for photos |
| Undertone | 1 point to the undertone test's starting look (Bronze Goddess for warm and olive, Evening Glam for cool, Business for neutral), plus blush and lipstick colors | Undertone test |
| Outfit | 2 points: Bronze Goddess for warm tones or gold jewelry, Eyeliner Focused for clean, graphic lines, Evening Glam for formal evening wear | The Bronze Goddess, Eyeliner Focused and Evening Glam guides |
| Skill | New to makeup: 1 point to Business, Soft Glam and Bronze Goddess, 2 points off Smokey Eyes, Eyeliner Focused and Evening Glam | The skill line on each look page |
| Eye shape | Half a point to the looks the hooded-eye and monolid guides name, plus a placement tip for every shape | Eye shape guide, hooded eyes, monolids |
| Face shape | A blush and highlight placement tip only | Face shape guide |
| Skin | A prep and base tip; acne-prone skin adds 1 point to Business for its light coverage | Make makeup last, mature skin, acne-prone skin |
Ties keep this order: Soft Glam, Business, Bronze Goddess, Evening Glam, Smokey Eyes, Eyeliner Focused.
What this quiz does not do
- It does not look at a photo or scan your face. It uses only the answers you tap.
- It does not match a foundation shade or recommend brands. Swatch foundation along your jaw in daylight and wait about ten minutes before deciding.
- It does not match makeup to a specific dress color. The guides cover only warm tones, graphic lines and formal evening wear; for any other outfit, choose by occasion and take blush and lipstick colors from your undertone.
- The sample photos are AI-generated fictional models wearing each look. They show the style, not your coloring.

Frequently asked questions
What makeup look is best for a wedding guest?
Soft Glam suits a daytime wedding; Evening Glam suits an evening or black-tie wedding with low light and flash photos.
What makeup should I wear to a job interview?
A polished, neutral look such as Business makeup: light, even coverage, neutral eyes, defined brows and lashes, and a comfortable rose or neutral lip.
How do I do makeup that looks good in photos?
Use a matte or satin base matched to your neck, set the shine, fill the brows, add a little more eye definition, blush and lip color than usual, and test with a photo in the same light.
How do I know my skin undertone?
Compare a few checks in daylight: vein color on the inner wrist, whether gold or silver jewelry flatters you more, and whether pure white or cream fabric looks better near your face. If they disagree, you may be neutral or olive, or the light may be off; the undertone test helps tell them apart.
Where should I put blush for my face shape?
Round faces sweep blush from just above the apples up toward the temples; square faces blend it outward in soft strokes; heart faces blend it from the apples outward toward the ears; long faces blend it horizontally toward the ears; oval and diamond faces blend it from the apples up toward the cheekbones.
Can you wear winged eyeliner with hooded eyes?
Yes. Draw the wing with your eyes open, keep it short and angled toward the tail of the brow, slightly above the fold so it stays visible, and keep the line thin along the lashes. A bat-wing shape that runs straight across the fold also works.
What is a good makeup look for summer?
Bronze Goddess: a light base, warm bronzer on the high points, bronze eyes, peach blush and a glossy nude lip.
